Why Choose Kingwood Family Dentistry for IV Sedation Dentistry?

What is IV Dental Sedation?

IV drip

Most commonly used in oral surgeries or long procedures, IV sedation can help to lessen high levels of anxiety and phobias associated with the dentist, especially therapies that include needles or drills, and make any dental procedure in our Kingwood dental office pleasant. Additionally, patients with sensitive gag reflexes, TMJ/TMD, or other neuromuscular issues that might make it difficult to keep their mouth open for time-consuming procedures can often benefit from IV sedation. Dr. Mosby takes plenty of time to talk with you about your anxiety level, medical issues, health history, and any prescription medications you might be taking to determine if IV sedation is safe for you.

What to Expect with IV Sedation Dentistry

The amount of sedative we administer will correlate to the level of anxiety, fear, or discomfort. With IV sedation, our team has extraordinary control over how deeply relaxed you become and can tailor the IV sedation to your needs. Depending on the amount of IV sedation you receive, you will probably feel marked drowsiness or fall asleep during your treatment. Most of the time, patients remain conscious enough to respond to questions but feel quite calm and peaceful, remembering little, if anything, about the appointment.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

When you visit our Kingwood dental office, your safety is our top concern. To prepare for an appointment involving IV sedation, you should not eat or drink anything for at least eight hours prior to your dental procedure. You may take your prescription medication as directed by your physician unless you are advised otherwise. While you are under IV sedation, our team will constantly monitor your breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure.

What to Expect Afterward

Once your procedure is complete, we will stop the IV sedation and let you rest comfortably for about 20 minutes. Once you are awake and feel sure on your feet, we will discharge you with instructions on managing discomfort with over-the-counter analgesics. For patients who have had oral surgery, our dental office will send you home with a prescription pain medication if necessary. It’s important that you have a responsible adult, such as a friend or family member, drive you home from your appointment and stay with you until the grogginess from the IV sedation has worn off. You should be able to resume your normal level of activity the next day.
